Academy Museum Gala 2026: the red carpet, decoded

The sixth Academy Museum Gala, held in Los Angeles on Saturday 17 October 2026, split into four looks: the sheer, beaded black column, the baby-pink gown, three-dimensional florals, and butterflies. Below, what the honorees and guests actually wore, with sources, and the evening dresses and shoes on BranSpot that get you to each silhouette. The rest of our red-carpet coverage is on the BranSpot blog.

Why the Academy Museum Gala now

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures held its sixth annual gala on 17 October 2026, presented by Rolex, honoring John Carpenter, Colman Domingo and Charlize Theron; the museum says the evening raises support for its exhibitions, screenings and education programs (Academy Museum press release). Theron received the Icon Award, Carpenter the Luminary Award and Domingo the Vantage Award (Variety). As a fundraiser rather than an awards show, it has become the autumn carpet where houses test their couture and pre-collection pieces on a Hollywood audience.

The honoree set the tone. Theron wore a long, sheer black Tom Ford column with lace and bead-and-crystal embroidery, with Boucheron jewels; Kate Hudson wore a blush-pink custom Giorgio Armani Privé bustier gown with crystal-embroidered ruffles; Greta Lee wore white silk chiffon Dior Haute Couture, fully embroidered, with a large flower at the hip; Joey King wore a dark teal duchesse satin custom Miu Miu gown with black tulle gloves and black satin platforms (Just Jared). Bustle grouped the night into graphic peplums, baby pinks, textured florals and butterflies, citing Chase Infiniti's Louis Vuitton gown with an oversized pleated peplum, Hailey Bieber in a baby-pink Chanel column, Gemma Chan in pale-pink Prada, and Amandla Stenberg in a Zimmermann gown covered in butterflies (Bustle). On the ground, WWD's footwear desk read the carpet as pumps and minimalist sandals (WWD).

What to look for

  • A black column with sheer panels or all-over beading: Theron's Tom Ford and Hunter Schafer's black velvet custom Prada both sat in this register (Just Jared).
  • Baby pink worn as a full-length column, the way Hailey Bieber (Chanel), Emily Bader (Giorgio Armani) and Gemma Chan (Prada) did (Bustle).
  • Florals as texture, not print: beaded or appliquéd blooms, like Greta Lee's Dior and Sofia Vergara's stacked purple blooms (Bustle).
  • Structure at the hip or shoulder: pleated peplums and sculpted drapery, from Chase Infiniti's Louis Vuitton to Anna Kendrick's Georges Chakra (Bustle).
  • Shoes kept quiet: a classic pump or a minimalist sandal, per WWD (WWD).
